Our Ambulatory Equine practice is run by Alan D. Chastain DVM, who is a licensed, experienced equine veterinarian. We believe in treating every patient as if they were our own horse and giving them the same loving attention and care. Dr. Alan D. Chastain DVM

As a young man growing up in Norman Oklahoma Dr. Chastain enjoyed working on ranches and farms and was actively involved with horses and cattle. Well educated and passionate about his work, Dr. Chastain has been practicing veterinary medicine since he obtained his DVM in 2000 from Oklahoma State University. (Go Pokes!)

After building a successful large animal practice in Oklahoma, Dr. Chastain made the decision to move to New Mexico in 2007 to work for a Race Track Practice. In 2011, he became a sole practitioner focusing on racing, lameness and performance offering ambulatory services only. The practice serves Albuquerque Downs Racetrack and Albuquerque surrounding areas for farm work.

Dr. Chastain follows the Principles of Veterinary Medical Ethics as well as the Ethical and Professional Guidelines set forth by the AAEP. Being honest and fair in his relations with Clients while considering the health and welfare of the patient are paramount to his beliefs. A firm believer in continuing education he attends meetings each year to learn new methods and technology. Dr. Chastain has some of the best equipment and technology to offer his clients including, Digital Radiographs, Ultrasound, Shockwave Therapy, Gastroscopy, and the Lameness Locator® by Equinosis®.

Outside of practice, Dr. Chastain enjoys spending time with his wife, Sabrina and young son AJ. The couple enjoy travel, spending time with friends and family and Native American art. The Family is working hard to build their new home/facility in the North Valley of Albuquerque.

Dr. Chastain is a member of the American Association for Equine Practitioners (AAEP), American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and New Mexico Veterinary Medical Association (NMVMA). He sits on the NMRC Medication and Rules Committee.

Sam Moore

Sam grew up in Rocky Ford Colorado and developed a passion for horse racing at age 5. He has been and avid fan ever since. In 2009 at the Keenland November Sale, Sam purchased his first Race Horse. Aqab a son of Empire Maker was sent to train in Sunland Park. Sam ran Aqab at Albuquerque Downs, Sunland Park, Sunray Park, Arapaho Park and Fonner Park. In 2015 Aqab was retired and return to his birth place in Florida at Glen Hill Farm. Sam began working for Chastain Equine Medicine as a veterinary assistant in October 2012. His passion for horses and racing along with an impressive memory has made him and integral part of the Company. Away from work Sam enjoys being around small animals like his family pug or the Farms pet pig Wilbur. Playing cards, politics, horse racing and sampling the local fast food restaurants takes up his free time.

Freightliner Van

Having a fully equipped van filled with technically advanced tools allows Doctor Chastain to treat your horse right at your barn. The Van contains most equipment found in a clinic which allows Dr. Chastain to diagnose and treat your horse in the same trip. All diagnostic and dental equipment, as well as medications required to treat and care for you horse are on hand. Let the clinic come to you.
